Andrew Garfield Says He Didn't Have Fake Butt In Spider-Man: No Way Home
Following Tom Holland's comments, Andrew Garfield denies that either he or Tobey Maguire wore a fake butt when in costume for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Andrew Garfield says he didn't have a fake butt in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tobey Maguire was the first actor to portray a live-action version of the web-slinger in Sam Raimi's beloved trilogy from 2002 to 2007, followed by The Social Network star, who played him in two Amazing Spider-Man movies before the series fizzled out due to box-office disappointment. Finally, Sony and Marvel struck a deal for Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Tom Holland taking up the highly-coveted mantle.
Holland's third solo-outing, Spider-Man: No Way Home, burst open the doors to the multiverse and allowed Maguire and Garfield to return as their past iterations of the character, uniting three generations of Spider-Man in one epic, cinematic event. The blockbuster also saw the returns of many of their fan-favorite villains, including Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Lizard (Rhys Ifans). While Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to make box-office history, recently passing Avatar as the third highest-grossing movie domestically, Garfield has been making frequent media appearances in support of his other roles.
During an appearance on the SAG Awards red carpet, where he was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Tick, Tick… Boom!, ET took the opportunity to ask Garfield about the fake buttocks controversy that has recently captured the interest of fans. Though he doesn't confirm which Spider-Man actor wore the fake butt, Garfield did say it was neither he nor Maguire, seemingly eliminating all three suspects in the matter. Read what he had to say below:
I have no idea. It's not me, so I have no clue. I don't know. I assumed everyone's butts were their butts. I don't think it's Tobey. I've seen Tobey's butt. Tobey's got back.
Holland recently revealed that one of the Spider-Man actors wore a fake butt for No Way Home, though he wouldn't say which. The comments threw Twitter into a tizzy, as fans began speculating about who the fake butt culprit may have been. Some even dug up evidence about Maguire padding his backside for the first Spider-Man movie from 2002, suggesting he may be guilty of the same 15 years later on No Way Home. But now, Garfield has cast doubt on that possibility, though he may just be covering for his friend and Spider-Man co-star.
If one were to take Garfield at his word, which fans might find it difficult to do given his repeated lying about his involvement in No Way Home, neither he nor Maguire sported phony buttocks for the film. If neither star is guilty, perhaps it's one of the several stunt doubles which were used on Spider-Man: No Way Home. Or, there's always a possibility Holland concocted the fake butt witch-hunt for his own amusement.
